Wholesale Market
The Wholesale Market is a 14-hectare business area right next to Kalasatama. The area is mostly home to wholesale and food production operators, but also houses many smaller companies from different sectors. You can find flower, meat and food product wholesalers as well as the Agros venue in the area.
The Wholesale Market is located near traffic nodes and is easily accessible. The Kalasatama metro station is only 500 metres away from the Market. The transport connections in the area will be further improved by the Crown Bridges light rail project, the rail lines from Kalasatama to Pasila and the Itäbaana express bike route.
Some of the properties in the Wholesale Market are privately owned, whereas some are owned by the City. Of the City-owned properties, Helsinki City Premises Ltd manages and rents out e.g. the Green Wholesale Hall, the Green Wholesale Market, the Wholesale Meat Hall and various production and storage areas as well as offices and premises.
The operation of the Freezing Plant at the Wholesale Market ended on 1 October 2024.

Future of the Wholesale Market
The City of Helsinki is planning significant redevelopment for the Wholesale Market area to be carried out gradually in the 2030s. According to preliminary visions, the area will become a larger centre for food culture and events, bordered by new residential buildings. The plan is to continue wholesale and food operations in the area.
Approximately 17 hectares in size, the planning area includes not only the current Wholesale Market and Teurastamo, but also Agroksenmäki and the adjacent residential area, which also includes a daycare centre. The area is demarcated in the south by Työpajankatu, in the west by Sörnäistenkatu, in the north by Hermannin rantatie and in the east by Vanha talvitie.
As preparatory work for the planning, Helsinki City Premises Ltd asked stakeholders in the Wholesale Market for insight on developing the area in cooperation with the City of Helsinki Urban Environment Division in autumn 2023. The sustainable development company Motiva Services Oy used the insights to compile the ‘Paikka tehdä’ vision. The vision provides a functional viewpoint to the future of the area and proposes elements for drafting land use planning principles and potential plan amendments. The City of Helsinki’s Urban Environment Division is in charge of drafting the planning principles and they are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2025.
